::The 25th time zone::                                                Version Française  |  Versão portuguesa

Electronic Shadow was created under the sign of mestization and hybridization – the mixture of origins and cultures, hybridization of transdisciplinary practices –, creation of new hybrid territories between our physical reality and potential digital extensions through the electronic media.

The Electronic Shadow projects are based on new propositions around the notion of territory and therefore of boundary. Electronic Shadow bases its practice on a permanent exchange between an utopian conceptual approach – to come up with possibilities in the routes opened by new media – and the technological, industrial and cultural limitations of the reality, making a significant effort to turn the possibilities into real facts.

The original concept of the 25th time zone idealized by Electronic Shadow, and explored in their various projects, questions our space-time perception. It proposes in a realistic manner the integration of new technologies to our physical environment, not only from a technological point of view, but from a social one. It creates the foundations of a new relationship with territoriality and, therefore, of a new reality.

The 25th time zone is the Internet based one, a new space-time of ubiquities and instantaneities, of memory and creation. It does not correspond to a specific zone, determined by geographical or political conventions. It is a new space-time. Nevertheless, it is possible to explore this virtual and endless space. Therefore, exploring it is how we turn it into existence, because it is simultaneously the expression of memory and the memory of expression.

Nowadays, many of us belong to this new nomads generation that explore this space, defining in some way, its boundaries. Our workspace travels with us all around, technologies are portable, and the physical world does not impose its limits to us. In Paris, Algier, Palermo or Helsinki, every point giving access to the net offers a gateway for these new territories. Through this perception, Electronic Shadow designs several hybrid space models – hybrids between its physical reality and its presence in the Internet, or dispersed in various places. It implies in creating connections between the visitors of an exhibition for example, and the public who has access to it through remote computers, from home or elsewhere.

Water is a major reference for Electronic Shadow, particularly the sea, which is a perfect metaphor of digital flow of information and networks like the internet.
