O exemplo bertalanffyano clássico é o estudo do corpo humano.
Tais

It is a pleasure to present the third call for entries for the academic journal V!RUS. This issue intends to approach the notion of System widely explored in various knowledge fields, and certainly in architecture, design and art.
In the General Systems Theory, the biologist Karl Ludwig von Bertalanffy endorsed the aristotelian formulation that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. According to Bertalanffy, this "whole" is a system whether it can be understood as the whole itself, but also as its parts, as the relationship between parts, and also between parts and the whole, and finally as qualities emerging from the interaction among them all.
The Bertalanffy's classic example for this formulation is the human body. According to him, a human body never could be understood only by understanding its parts one-by-one without considering the vital processes - interactions - which put them in functioning as both isolated and jointly.
Historically, these notions have been used by the metaphor that considers the city (and the building, the object, the constructions…) as a living organism both in studies and interventions on physical spaces in different scales, as well as in studies about the use of digital media complying to hybrid spaces - either concrete or virtual ones.
In different knowledge fields, a great number of applications base their assertions on systemic visions following Bertalanffy's definition.
The main goal of V!RUS 03 is thus to foster and to shelter the presentation and the debate about ways this theme is being approached, introducing and discussing theoretical references, and proposing viewpoints, proceedings and strategies for designing.
We are interested to receive submissions related to the systemic thinking, from all knowledge areas, searching as much as possible to approach concerns expressed in Nomads.usp investigation subjects, in order to foster the academic dialogue with our research center.
Besides theoretical and historical studies involving aspects, such as general systems' theory, second-order cybernetics and complexity theory, there will be also welcomed the presentation of practical explorations in all knowledge fields but especially in architecture, design and art, either in its creation process, or its products, as well as in both.
Entries will be received until March 21st, 2010. Please see the journal
submission rules, available at www.nomads.usp.br/virus/submissao_submission.php.
[soon in english] or contact us directly at vnomads@sc.usp.br
Besides texts and static images, drawings and modelling of architectural and objects design are highly welcomed, as well as videos and short movies, slides presentations, audio files with interviews and testimonials, and so on. Nomads.usp has a major interest of exploring possibilities of the use of the digital media for scientific diffusion. Papers can be written either in english or in portuguese languages.
